All about Joshua

10.10.2010 Joshua David was born at 5:11 pm. He weighed 9 pounds and 7.7 ounces and was 21 inches long. Mommy was in labor for less than 12 hours and only at the hospital for less than 2 hours before he was born. Our hospital stay was pleasant and uneventful. Josh liked to eat and was quite talented at it right away. Big sister Allie along with Grandma and Grandpa pay us a visit that night. Allie is excited to hold her baby brother for about 5 minutes and then asks Grandma for a snack and to go back to her house. Allie stays with Grandma and Grandpa for the next week.

10.11.2010 Before heading to Noblesville, Grandma, Grandpa and Allie stop by to see Josh again. Allie holds him for a bit until he starts to cry. This makes Allie upset and she starts to cry which in turn upsets mommy and she starts to cry. Daddy declares that we cannot all cry at once. We try to pull it together.

10.12.2010 On mommy’s birthday, we come home from the hospital. Josh weighed 8 pounds and 14 ounces at discharge.

10.13.2010 Josh goes to the doctor for a check-up on his jaundice which is not too bad. He weighs 8 pounds and 13 ounces and eats very well. The doctor is pleased by his progress and says that we don’t have to come back until he is a month old. Daddy heads into work that afternoon for a bit and mommy and Josh survive without him. We have our first visitors–Brittany and the McKeiths.

10.14.2010 Josh gets his first bath. He pees all over daddy. Meghan Miller comes to take newborn pictures of Josh. Josh refuses to go to sleep during the pictures and instead demonstrates his extremely strong neck.

10.15.2010 Big sister Allie returns along with Grandma, Grandpa, Grandma June and Grandpa Marvin. While Allie is holding Josh, he proceeds to have a very noisy dirty diaper. This startles Allie very much and she starts to cry. Grandma tries to rescue her by picking her up and saying–let’s let mommy change his diaper. This upsets Allie further as she very much wants to help change his diaper. Allie is appointed chief wipe-warmer. She warms the diaper wipes by sticking them up her shirt.

10.16.2010 Nana and Papa come to visit along with Aunt Sandy and Aunt Marie. Along with daddy, they spend the day assembling the new swing set. This pleases Allie very much.

10.17.2010 Uncle Nate, Aunt Erin, Thomas, Noah and Christian come to visit. All are excited to see Josh except Noah who is more excited about all the cool toys we have at our house.

10.180.2010 Daddy heads back to work full-time and Allie goes back to school. Josh and mommy are on their own.

10.19.2010 We all attend the Omelet Breakfast and then mommy and Josh head to the hospital for a weight check. Josh weighs 9 pounds and 7 ounces.

10.20.2010 Back at the doctor to have Josh’s circumcision and very smelly belly button checked out. Both are pronounced fine and fall off the next day. He weighs 9 pounds and 9 ounces meaning he gained 12 ounces in a week. Mommy has excellent milk.

10.30.2010 Grandma and Grandpa are back to visit and Josh attends his first tailgate. Bad news…the Boilers lose. Good news…the Illini win!

11.15.2010 One month check-up…Josh is 13 pounds, 3 ounces (97th percentile), 22 1/4 inches long (62nd percentile) and his head is 40.2 cm (81st percentile)

12.10.2010 Two month check-up…Josh is 15 pounds, 9 ounces (98th percentile), 23 3/4 inches long (77th percentile) and his head is 41.8 cm (87th percentile). He is comfortably in 3-6 month clothes and size 3 diapers. We sold on Craigslist around 200 size 1 and 2 diapers he outgrew too fast and he never got to wear several cute 0-3 month outfits.

1.18.2011 Josh was diagnosed with his first ear infection. Poor guy suffered from second-child syndrome as we probably waited too long before taking him to the doctor. But in our defense, he never ran a fever. And he is certainly still growing. At his appointment, he weighed 17 pounds and 10 ounces.

2.8.2011 The ear infection never went away and then turned into RSV which landed Josh in the hospital. He stayed for 5 nights and got to experience the joys of supplemental oxygen up his nose and a feeding tube into his tummy.

2.10.2011 4 month check up….fresh out of the hospital, Josh was still a little puny for his 4 month check-up. He weighed 17 pounds and 6 ounces (89th percentile) and his head was 43.2 (74th percentile). I don’t think we got him stretched out well for his length as he was only 24 1/2 inches long (35th percentile). At least that is what we hope.

4.15.2011 6 month check up…He continues to be a big guy. Weight 20 pounds, 12 ounces (92nd percentile), length 26 3/8 inches (45th percentile) and head 45.0 cm (81st percentile). We have started with some solid food but he is not a really big fan of it. The doctor recommended continuing with one meal a day. Then at 7 months, we can add in puffs and such. He isn’t reliably rolling over but he does sit up on his own very well.

5.3.2011 I made a somewhat obsessive sleep chart to try and figure out why he wasn’t sleeping well. At this point, almost 7 months, he still wakes up twice a night to eat.

6.8.2011 Resorted to letting Josh cry-it-out some in hopes this would allow him to sleep better. Mixed results but feels like a step in the right direction.

7.18.2011 9 month check-up…Weight: 23 pounds, 11 ounces (89th percentile). Length: 27 3/8 inches (18th percentile). Head: 46 cm (69th percentile). He rolls like a champ now and has been sleeping on his stomach. He scoots a bit and spins in circles while sitting or on his tummy but no crawling yet. He had a near constant ear infection for about 2.5 months but it had cleared by his check-up–good! He is having 1-2 tubs of purees each day and a bit of table food but we are still working on it.

10.14.2011 12 month check-up….Weight: 25 (82th percentile). Length: 28 5/8 inches (15th percentile). Head: 47 cm (68th percentile). Just in the last month, he has learned to crawl and FAST! He is close to taking independent steps as well but really likes to push around Allie’s baby stroller in order to get to places. Lots of table food these days and just a bit of jar food to fill in the gaps. Naps once a day after lunch and only nurses morning and night. Still doesn’t sleep great but that might be the ears. Between now and the 9 month check-up, he’s been on 3 rounds of antibiotics including a 3 day course of injectables. ENT to come soon. Also this month, his first words…ball and bye-bye with a wave.

4.12.2012 18 month check-up…Weight: 25 pounds, 12 ounces (49th percentile). Length 31 inches (15th percentile). Head: 48 cm (57th percentile). Given these stats, it is no surprise that Josh is looking longer and leaner these days. He walks, runs (almost), and climbs with abandon and is much braver than Allie ever was or is today. He has about 30 words now including Mommy, Daddy and Allie and some of my favorites…one more time and oh man! He is a pretty happy guy even when he doesn’t feel well which these days is pretty often. Unfortunately, the tubes in his ears, while they are certainly working, have not solved all his health related problems. We’ve been to see a lung specialist, had a round of nebulizer treatments but that is over now. Waiting on another ENT consult. Mostly, we’d just like a cold-free month.

12.03.12 2 year check-up, a bit late..Height, 34 inches (26th percentile). Weight, 29 lbs, 3 oz (60th percentile). Head, 48.5 cm (40th percentile). Dr. See estimates his adult height at 5′ 8.5″.

5.13.13 Josh has a second set of ear tubes put in and his adenoids taken out. This results in a very angry Josh coming to stay with us for about 10 days. At the tail end of this, he develops horrible bad breath. All is normal but none of it is fun. Time will tell if the adenoid removal helps with his overall level of sickness.
